The last 12 months were filled with success, happiness, some obstacles but big accomplishment. After one year in Austria, the teams have grown bigger, stronger and with higher skills for Taekwondo and for Life.
This webpage had thousands of visits from 129 countries. The top 10 were Austria, United States, Portugal, South Korea, Brazil, United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, Australia and Russia, but we had visitors from such remote locations like East-Timor, Guam, Vanuatu or Samoa.
We have now registered in our teams almost 300 athletes, we did introductory Taekwondo Training for almost 17.000 young people in Austria, from high-schools to technical schools, to youth festivals to sport festivals, you name it - we were there.
From training in 3 different continents to having students from all 5 continents, we are closing 2011 with a deserved break, getting ready and even stronger for 2012.
From December 23rd to December 30th, there will be no training but, 2012 starts with a Wintercamp in the mountains from January 2nd ´til 5th, a Taekwondo retreat to focus on the development of Poomsae and Kyorugi techniques.
For all those athletes, trainers, family and friends who made 2011 a great success, a big THANK YOU!

a poem by Master Lindsey Bell
Kukkiwon Course, we're on our way;
From many countries we're here to stay;
For one week of intensive training,
We all know it will be draining.
People from countries far away;
Nepal, Colombia, the USA.
All here for one thing; a martial art:-
Something so close to our heart.
We want to learn and improve our techniques;
So our poomse is not 'unique'.
We come to Korea to learn the Kukkiwon way;
And make sure bad habits are kept at bay!
Outside, all week, the rain is relentless;
Sitting in a classroom, we couldn't care-less
We're reciting terms like "momtong makki";
But really we want to practice dollyo chagi!
“Fighting Man” makes us shout "hosay!"
Is this the usual Korean way?
We clap and applaud Korean Masters;
If this goes on, I'll need a hand plaster.
Lunch is served on plastic trays;
Bulgogi, rice, a banana today;
We dash from the class to the food block,
Then back again just after one o'clock.
Eventually we get on to the floor,
Desperately hoping the classroom's no more!
My legs feel heavy like a log;
Is it because of last night’s fried dog ;)!?!?
We start from the beginning; strange for some;
Il jang, ee jang, sam jang and so on...
Variations in stance and block;
Looks like we'll be here around the clock!
And for some the days are long;
After 18:30, the practice goes on.
Perseverance, self-control, indomitable spirit;
By the end of the week, we will get it!
We're in our doboks from dawn til dusk,
This is something you couldn't make up;
"Practice makes perfect" as we say;
So we keep on going the Kukkiwon way.
But it looks like the efforts do pay;
Five by five we were tested that day,
With happy faces and camera clicks;
We receive our certificates.
The test is over; practical and theory,
Time for lunch and maybe some beer-y :) ?
Goodbye instructor course number 23;
We had a good time, now that's all from me! |

The blows hurt a lot... kicking hurts a lot... to kick until you can no more, hurts a lot... many times I think that the best would be to forget this. You know it hurts a lot... You also know that more than the pain would be not to have it. IT IS CALLED TAEKWONDO AND IT IS OUR PASSION!!! don´t ask me to explain!

Since technical errors of LaJust PSS (protector and scoring system) were found during the national team selection tournaments in Korea in February and March this year, the WTF immediately reported this matter to the ad-hoc WTF committee and took measures to solve the technical problems and formulated action plans based on the recommendation from the ad-hoc committee. After a thorough investigation, the WTF concluded that the error was caused in the course of upgrading software of LaJust PSS at the beginning of this year to adopt new Competition Rules of the WTF which was passed at the WTF General Assembly in October last year. LaJust has already distributed corrected version of the upgraded software to all buyers. The WTF held urgent and intensive meetings with LaJust and organized a test with the corrected version of the software on April 5 to monitor if correction was made appropriately. The new version worked properly giving confidence for the use at the 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships. The WTF is planning another test on April 22 in Gyeongju Gymnasium to check proper functioning of the LaJust system in the operational aspects. In addition, the WTF has established a contingency plan in case of malfunction of PSS during the championships in Gyeongju. LaJust PSS will be switched to non-electronic scoring mode if that happens. This switch will also be finally checked at the test on April 22. Although the cause of the problem was found as a bug created during the upgrading process and not much significant and easily repairable, the consequences of the error were undoubtedly enormous. Therefore, the WTF has formed an evaluation group to screen the performance of LaJust PSS at the 2011 WTF World Taekwondo Championships. The possibility of the use of LaJust PSS at the 2012 London Olympic Games will be subject to final evaluation of the group to be headed by Mr. Ivan Dibos, an IOC member of Peru. He also serves as a WTF vice president and chairman of the ad-hoc WTF committee on PSS.

Back in the early 2000’s, I was spending my time back and forth across the globe in business-related travels. I often found myself in business rooms with strangers or alone in a hotel room. That’s when I heard of CouchSurfing. This was 2005; there were only 15,000 members in little over 400 cities. I decided to give it a try -- what could be so hard about meeting new people when I was surrounded by strangers all the time? Turns out I had an amazing time in Seoul with people from all over the world who were not only amazingly friendly, but also eager to share their perspectives on Korean lifestyle with a newcomer.
Six months ago, I moved to Vienna for the long-term -- a big shift iin both my life and my career. Vienna is an amazing city with an awesome CouchSurfing vibe. It has a very participative online forum community, and the number of activities organized everyday is even more impressive. There’s always something to do, people to meet, places to visit...but something was missing: the opportunity for personal growth, the teach-learn-share aspect that makes CouchSurfing so much more than a traveling website.
I learned that when summer is over, Vienna CouchSurfers don’t have as many opportunities to play outdoor games, or to engage in sports activities for free. It was then that I started asking in the local groups if people wanted to join me for Taekwondo trainings.
I got 20 positive replies in one week, and was ready to move things one step further. We found a place that we could use for free -- the Yong Du Club -- and were able to schedule 1-hour trainings three times a week.
 Adrien greets the judge with his warrior smile while Cesar watches nervously
After 5 months of training sessions, we are now a real Taekwondo Team . Our athletes are officially registered in the Austrian Federation, and we have a steady group of a dozen participants with some sporadic visitors. We train with other teams, we attend seminars, we do belt exams and we have fun, a lot of fun. Everyone that shows up for the trainings is a friend and we welcome new members every day, but, as a teacher, I must praise the regulars and say that some talent was found. It’s nice to see Adrienbecoming a real sportsperson, dedicating himself to his newfound love; Manon is by far the most devoted Taekwondo athlete we have -- she even goes 3 extra times a week to get more practice! These two, along with Jack, Bara and Julien, have improved their physical condition, flexibility and motor coordination. When Lucian -- the most experienced and high-ranking student -- is home from his travels, he helps with the trainings on the days I cannot be there.
 Julien and Adrien, tired and happy after their first Taekwondo tournament
All together we’ve grown as a team and as individuals. This month, we participated in our first tournament, and everyone brought back home a medal and a satisfying feeling of accomplishment.
As an instructor, I’m growing so much from their learning process that my teaching skills and motivation to face the daily challenges have increased.
The goal now is to find find CS Taekwondo clubs elsewhere, so that in the future we can set up an international CS Taekwondo Exchange!
